Overview and History
Overview
The importance of the strategic implementation of international standards has been increasingly recognized in light of the current rapid advances in the globalization of the railway business. The promotion of the outstanding technologies that underpin the Shinkansen (Japanese high speed train) and the high-density urban passenger rail services of Japan, as well as the building of safe and eco-friendly railway networks, will not only benefit the development of the domestic railway business and, but will also help to raise the current standards in many countries and to preserve the global environment.
Such social background and demands led us to found our center. Based on the policies presented by the Railway Technology Standardization Committee when called on by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism (MLIT), the center was set up not only to perform the role as the national secretariat of the IEC/TC9, but also to provide broad and centralized support for the railway-related ISO committee activities.
In July 2012, the center took over the national secretariat of the newly established ISO/TC269. In addition to the ISO/TC17/SC15 national secretariat, the support system for the ISO committee was strengthened.
The main activities carried out by our center are the review of international standards, the proposal of strategies related to international standardization, and the gathering and dissemination of information on international standards.
The center is operated with the support of its members including domestic railway operators, railway-related manufacturers and domestic standards development organizations.
